Terms and conditions

1. Definitions

1.1 Lara

Lara is a machine translation system that utilizes the most advanced and state-of-the-art AI technologies to deliver the best and most trustworthy translations to its users. Lara automatically translates text or documents (Input) into user-selected target languages (Output), providing high-quality translation services directly through its web-based user-friendly interface.

The Website is a hosted version of Lara operated by Translated s.r.l. (“Translated”, “We”, “Us”, “Our”, “Ours”), headquartered in Rome (RM), Via Indonesia no. 23, VAT number IT07173521001, email: info@translated.com

These Terms and Conditions of Use refer to the latter. The Website is the property of Translated. By accessing or using the Website, you confirm your acceptance of these Terms and Conditions of Use and your agreement to be bound by them. If you do not accept these Terms and Conditions of Use, do not use this Website. We reserve the right to terminate or suspend your access or use of the Website if either: (a) we reasonably consider that you have breached these Terms and Conditions of Use, or (b) we consider it necessary to do so for security purposes.

Lara provides a facility to input text or documents for translation, referred to as “original,” and generate machine-translated outputs, which can be viewed or downloaded by the User, referred to as “translated output.” Internally, the original content is processed using AI technologies to generate an automatic translation in one or more user-selected target languages.

1.2 Service

The “Service” (the “Tool,” the “Webapp”) refers to the applications, software, products, and services provided by Translated, including any Beta Previews.

1.3 User

Your use of the Website and Service must not violate any applicable laws, including copyright laws, trademark laws, or other laws in your jurisdiction. You are responsible for making sure that your use of the Service is in compliance with laws and any applicable regulations.

You agree that you will not under any circumstances violate the following Acceptable Use Policies.

  • relates to sexual exploitation or abuse, including of minors. We do not tolerate content associated with sexual exploitation or abuse of another individual, including where minors are concerned.

3. Content

3.1 Ownership and Responsibility

The User retains ownership of and responsibility for their Content. If you’re uploading or copying into the UI anything you did not create yourself or do not own the rights to, you agree that you are responsible for any Content you upload to Lara; that you will only submit Content that you have the right to post; and that you will fully comply with any third-party licenses relating to Content you submit.

Ownership of Content: To the extent allowed by applicable law, (a) you retain ownership of your Input, and (b) you own the Output. We transfer to you all rights, titles, and interests we may have in the Output.

3.2 Learning Mode and Incognito Mode

Lara offers two operational modes that affect how your translation data is handled:

  • Learning Mode: In this mode, translation texts are securely stored to help improve the quality of the translation model over time. All data stored in this mode is encrypted, ensuring the security of your information.
  • Incognito Mode: In this mode, translation texts are not stored, ensuring maximum privacy. Data is encrypted, never stored, not shown in history, and sharing links are disabled. However, the quality of the translations remains static as no data is retained for model improvement.

These options allow you to choose between enhanced translation quality and maximum privacy.

3.3 Quality Feedback Feature

Lara includes a translation quality feedback feature that uses an AI system to analyze translation tasks based on various inputs, such as the source and target languages, the text, the required translation style, the contextual information and the provided translation. The AI system generates feedback on the translation, categorized as follows:

  • Excellent: The system considers the translation excellent, effectively captures the context and nuances. There’s no need for further refinement
  • Good: The translation conveys the overall meaning, with minor nuances needing improvement. The feedback may suggest possible improvements to enhance the translation.
  • Ambiguous Source: The feedback explains that the source text lacks clarity or context, making accurate translation challenging. The AI may ask specific questions to help clarify ambiguities in the source text.

This feature aims to assist users by providing automated feedback based on the AI’s assessment, helping to refine and improve translations if necessary. Please see also Disclaimer on Quality Feedback.

3.4 User-Generated Content Disclaimer

Lara is not responsible for the Content that Users upload or create using the Service. The User is solely responsible for ensuring that their Content does not violate any laws, regulations, or third-party rights, including but not limited to intellectual property rights. Lara does not actively monitor User-Generated Content but reserves the right to remove or disable access to any Content that it deems to be in violation of these Terms or any applicable laws.

3.5 Data Retention and Deletion

Content stored in Learning Mode is retained as long as necessary to improve the translation model unless the User requests its deletion. Users can request the deletion of their Content by contacting Lara Support. Upon deletion, the Content will be permanently removed from our servers, and any related data will be erased in accordance with our data protection policies. In Incognito Mode, data is not stored, so no retention or deletion is necessary.
For personal data retention and deletion please refer to our Personal Data Processing Policy

3.6 Prohibited Content

The User agrees not to upload, post, or share Content through Lara that is illegal, harmful, offensive, or infringes upon the intellectual property rights of others. This includes, but is not limited to, content that is:

  • Obscene, defamatory, or abusive
  • In violation of privacy rights or data protection laws
  • Infringing on copyrights, trademarks, or other proprietary rights
  • Containing malware, spyware, or other harmful code

Translated reserves the right to remove any Content that violates these prohibitions or to block the access of any user who engages in such activities.

3.7 Survival

All provisions of this Agreement which, by their nature, should survive termination will survive termination — including, without limitation: ownership provisions, warranty disclaimers, and limitations of liability.

4. Governing Law

Any claim relating to Lara shall be governed by Italian law without regard to its conflict of law in other countries. The Court of Rome shall have jurisdiction for all disputes.

5. Limitation of Liability

You understand and agree that we will not be liable to you or any third party for any loss of profits, use, goodwill, or data, or for any incidental, indirect, special, consequential or exemplary damages, however arising, that result from:

  • the use, disclosure, or display of your User-Generated Content with other users you choose;
  • your use or inability to use the Service;
  • any modification, price change, suspension, or discontinuance of the Service;
  • the Service generally or the software or systems that make the Service available;
  • unauthorized access to or alterations of your transmissions or data;
  • statements or conduct of any third party on the Service;
  • any other user interactions that you input or receive through your use of the Service; or
  • any other matter relating to the Service.

Our liability is limited whether or not we have been informed of the possibility of such damages, and even if a remedy set forth in this Terms of Service is found to have failed of its essential purpose. We will have no liability for any failure or delay due to matters beyond our reasonable control.

5.1 Disclaimer on Quality Feedback

The translation quality feedback feature in Lara is powered by an AI system that analyzes translation tasks and provides feedback based on the data and criteria it processes. While this system is designed to assist Users by offering insights into translation quality, it is not infallible and may not always accurately reflect the true quality or appropriateness of a translation.

The feedback provided—whether it categorizes a translation as Excellent, Good, or Ambiguous Source—is intended as a guide. Users should consider the feedback as a helpful tool rather than a definitive judgment. The AI's suggestions, particularly in the Ambiguous Source category, are based on its interpretation of the text and may not fully capture all contextual subtleties.

Lara cannot guarantee the accuracy or reliability of the quality feedback provided by the AI system. The User retains full responsibility for reviewing and finalizing the translation output. Lara will not be liable for any errors, misinterpretations, or issues arising from reliance on the quality feedback provided by the AI system.

5.2 Changes To These Terms

We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to amend these Terms of Service at any time and will update these Terms of Service in the event of any such amendments.
